Sesame Street Secures New Streaming Deal with Netflix and PBS
Sesame Workshop has announced a new partnership with Netflix to stream new episodes of Sesame Street, beginning later this year with season 56. This deal marks a significant turnaround after Warner Bros. Discovery chose not to renew its licensing agreement, and follows a strategic shift at HBO Max. Under the new arrangement, episodes will also be released simultaneously on PBS and PBS Kids, maintaining the show's long-standing relationship with public television. The partnership with Netflix aims to expand the show's reach globally while ensuring free access to children in U.S. communities via PBS. The upcoming season will feature a reimagined format, dropping the magazine style in favor of longer segments and a new animated element called Tales From 123, to be released in three batches. This deal provides Sesame Workshop with financial stability after facing budget cuts and layoffs earlier this year, while also offering an unusual opportunity for Netflix to provide free access to educational content. Sesame Workshop CEO Sherri Westin emphasized that this public-private partnership will help bring their research-based curriculum worldwide, with Netflix's support ensuring children everywhere can grow smarter, stronger, and kinder.
