Sabalenka Wins Third Madrid Open Title in Straight Sets Over Gauff
Aryna Sabalenka defeated Coco Gauff in straight sets, 6-3, 7-6(3), to win her third Madrid Open title, tying Petra Kvitova’s record. Sabalenka, ranked No. 1, played her third final at the tournament, previously winning in 2021 and 2023, and secured her third title of the season after Brisbane and Miami, marking her 20th career WTA title. She also equaled Gauff’s head-to-head record at five wins each. Sabalenka dominated the match with strong serving, winning 68% of points on her first serve, and showcased resilience by overcoming Gauff’s lead in the second set to clinch the victory in a tiebreaker. Gauff, the U.S. Open champion, had a chance to rise to No. 2 with a win but fell short, with her final record dropping to nine wins in 11 finals. Sabalenka’s win also marked her sixth consecutive victory over a top-10 opponent this year without dropping a set. The men's final will feature Casper Ruud against Jack Draper. Sabalenka expressed her joy, saying, “I'm super happy I was able to win this year,” and praised Gauff’s fighting spirit. The tournament took place on outdoor clay courts in Madrid, with the victory adding to Sabalenka’s impressive season performance.
